Material

Carl Mertens cutlery sets are made from high-quality materials of German origin:

• 18/10 stainless steel (contains 18% chromium and 10% nickel)
• Silver-plating with a 100g layer of pure silver
• Gold-plating with 24 carat gold
• 925/000 sterling silver

All Carl Mertens flatware are dishwasher-proof according to RAL.

The forged blades of the table knives are made of a stainless blade steel which is alloyed with molybdenum and hardened. Carl Mertens’ all-steel knives are made completely from this material as well.

Cutlery care

In addition to washing them in the dishwasher with suitable agents, Carl Mertens recommends washing all table knives by hand. Silver- and gold-plated cutlery and cutlery made from real silver lose their colour with time and tarnish. Use a mild silver care product and silver care cloths and/or silver soaps or cotton wool.

Stains, flash rust etc.

If cutlery is left uncleaned for a longer period of time, food acids (fruit acids, milk acid, acetic acid, and mustard) stuck to it can cause bluish stains or discolouration in any colour of the rainbow. Use a metal care product to polish away stains and discolouration marks. This also applies to the removal of flash rust, which is more likely to collect on blade steel when it has been washed in a dishwasher.
